A Seattle Metro bus driver was fatally stabbed near the University of Washington, with an eyewitness detailing the driver’s attempts to deescalate the situation before the attack. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Richard Sitzlack, remains at large.

SEATTLE, WA (2-minute read) — In the early hours of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded near the University of Washington in Seattle. At approximately 3 a.m., officers responded to reports of a stabbing just a block west of Parrington Lawn. Upon arrival, they discovered 59-year-old Metro bus driver, Shawn Yim, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest. Despite immediate medical assistance, Yim was pronounced dead at the scene.

An eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, was the sole passenger on the bus during the incident. According to their account, the altercation began over an open window. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Richard Sitzlack, became agitated and pepper-sprayed Yim. Both individuals exited the bus, with Yim attempting to de-escalate the situation without resorting to physical confrontation. Tragically, the confrontation escalated, leading to Yim’s fatal stabbing.

Authorities have identified Sitzlack as the primary suspect. He is described as 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 195 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a navy-blue hooded sweatshirt, dark gray/blue jacket, black beanie, yellow backpack, blue camouflage pants, dark sneakers with white soles, and carrying a red shopping bag. Sitzlack is known to frequent the University District and Downtown Seattle areas.

Court records reveal that Sitzlack was previously arrested in November 2023 for the murder of his roommate. In that case, he claimed self-defense, stating that his roommate attacked him with a machete, prompting him to retaliate with a knife. Due to inconsistencies in his account and insufficient evidence to disprove his self-defense claim, prosecutors did not pursue charges at that time.

This tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of public transportation environments and the importance of situational awareness for both operators and passengers.

Safety Tip: Always remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings when using public transportation. If you witness or are involved in a confrontation, prioritize your safety by maintaining a safe distance and contacting authorities immediately.
