The story now is that Tyler Robinson, a wholesome Mormon boy, has killed Charlie Kirk because Kirk wasn’t right-wing enough. Twenty-two-year-old Robinson was taken into custody on 12 September after a family member recognized him in surveillance images, a development investigators described as pivotal in ending a nationwide manhunt.

“We are confident we have the right individual in custody,” an FBI spokesperson said, “but we are still working to establish the full picture of who he is and why he acted.”

Robinson had no criminal record up until this point. He was raised Mormon in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a great student. He scored in the top percentile on his college entrance exam and earned himself a four-year scholarship to Utah State University in Logan.

Social media accounts indicate Robinson’s father runs a kitchen countertop and cabinet installation business, while his mother is a social worker and the family is active in the Mormon church.

Robinson had also become more political in recent years, the family member told investigators, and authorities said he had engraved what appeared to be anti-fascist messages on bullet casings they found with the suspected murder weapon, according to a report by the BBC. The bullet casings were engraved with phrases like “Hey Fascist, catch!” and “Oh bella ciao,” which investigators and online analysts link to memes popular within the Groyper movement, a far-right faction critical of mainstream conservatives like Kirk.

Robinson allegedly aligns with the ideology of far-right “Groyper” supporters of Nick Fuentes, who viewed Kirk as a “fake conservative”. Some media reports have claimed that Robinson’s motive was that Kirk wasn’t right-wing enough.

Charlie Kirk: “Are They Going To Murder, Or Try To Murder…Myself?”

Kirk was applauding the Mormon church before he was shot. “I love how Mormons send missionaries around the world,” Kirk said, gushing over the aspect of Mormonism that amounts to colonialism, and many others loathe about the religion. Mormon missionaries often go into poverty-ridden third-world countries and convince people to join the church, and pay 10% of their income to a multi-billion-dollar organization. Criticism of these practices is incredibly fair, even though Kirk seemed myopic on the issue.

“I love how polite they are. … Half my team is Mormon – Mormons are great people,” Kirk told a rapt audience, drawing a loud cheer shortly before the fatal shot rang out.

“I’m an evangelical Christian, but I’m not one of those guys that hates on Mormons.”

While we do not blame the Mormon church for Robinson’s radicalization, it is hard to ignore that this organization is a “high-demand religion” and is often called a cult by experts and psychologists. Suppose Robinson was easily able to become entrenched in this religion. Is it too far of a stretch to think he could be a person who is easily radicalized in general?
