A fatal shooting in Hardeeville, SC, is now believed to have been a case of self-defense. Police say an armed citizen acted lawfully when he shot a man suspected of attempting multiple assaults.

HARDEEVILLE, SC (3-minute read) — A Monday night shooting in Hardeeville ended with one man dead and police now saying it was likely a justified act of self-defense by an armed citizen.

According to updated information from the Hardeeville Police Department, investigators believe the deceased man was actively attempting armed assaults on multiple potential victims before confronting a legally armed individual who defended himself with a firearm. Authorities are still working to notify the suspect’s next of kin and have not yet released his name.

The incident began around 9:38 p.m. when police were dispatched to Whyte Hardee Boulevard following reports that a suspect was threatening a driver at gunpoint, trying to force them from their vehicle. Witnesses then saw the suspect flee the scene.

Suspect Confronts Armed Citizen Before Being Shot

Shortly after the initial call, officers responding to the area heard gunfire near 20750 Whyte Hardee Blvd. When they arrived, they found two men, one of whom had been shot. First responders attempted life-saving measures, and the injured man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second individual on the scene was temporarily detained, but police later confirmed he was the one who acted in self-defense and released him after further investigation. Authorities also emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.

While police continue to investigate, this case underscores the importance of lawful concealed carry and situational awareness in high-risk encounters.

Citizens with information about the incident are encouraged to contact the Hardeeville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in high-crime areas, and know your state’s laws regarding the use of deadly force in self-defense situations.
