GROVETOWN, GA — On Monday, January 6, 2025, around 9:27 p.m., Grovetown police responded to reports of a domestic dispute and subsequent gunfire in the 7600 block of Main Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a woman had fired a single shot to stop a man, identified as Devaris Hampton, 36, from forcibly entering her home.

According to the Grovetown Police Department, the woman, who is nine months pregnant with Hampton’s child, had recently ended their relationship. Hampton reportedly became upset and came to her home, where he began banging on the door and windows before breaking a living room window in an attempt to enter.

Fearing for her safety and that of her two minor children inside the home, the woman fired one shot, striking Hampton in the upper right arm. Hampton fled to a nearby residence on Adams Lane, where he pounded on the door and asked the occupant to call 911.

Officers responded to both scenes, providing medical aid to Hampton until emergency responders arrived. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released into custody. Hampton was booked into the Columbia County Detention Center on outstanding probation warrants and a new charge of Criminal Trespass – Family Violence.

The police investigation confirmed that the woman acted in self-defense to protect herself, her unborn child, and the two minors in the home. She will not face any charges.

This case underscores the importance of being prepared to defend yourself and your loved ones in situations involving imminent threats of violence. Defensive firearm use should always be a last resort, but when confronted with an attacker intent on causing harm, a lawful and decisive response can save lives.
