Police said Sunday that a person of interest is in custody following a deadly shooting at Brown University that killed two people and injured nine.

Police told Fox News that the individual was found at a hotel in Coventry, which is about 17 miles south of Providence.

Providence Chief of Police Colonel Oscar Perez Jr. declined to say whether the suspect was affiliated with Brown University when asked by reporters at a news conference, citing the early stages of the investigation, but confirmed that the person of interest is in their 20s.

He said the next process for the department is coordinating with prosecutors, collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven individuals remain in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition, and another has been discharged.

“Our two priorities as of last night were to, one, bring the individual responsible to justice and that investigation is ongoing, although we have a meaningful update that we’ve just provided. Two, is our concern for the victims who, as I mentioned, are still – most of whom are still hospitalized. That remains our priority right now,” Smiley told reporters.

Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee said the community is keeping the victims and their families in its thoughts after the horrific event.

“I’m praying that the families will find the strength to be able to deal with this in a way that their lives are not disrupted as much as they probably will be,” he added.

Smiley also confirmed that the shelter-in-place order for the Providence community has been lifted. Brown University had lifted its own campus shelter-in-place order earlier Sunday morning.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said the campus faces a long recovery, and her priority in the coming months is to bring people back together and ensure they feel safe and supported.

She cited religious life staff and student services as key resources available to students impacted by the mass shooting.

Fox News’ Bryan Llenas contributed to this report.
