MEMPHIS, TN — On January 10, 2025, a robbery at Gordins Butcher Shoppe on Thomas Street escalated into a dangerous confrontation, ending in a gunfight between a store clerk and an armed suspect. Thankfully, the clerk emerged unharmed and was able to fend off the attackers.

The incident began shortly after 11:00 a.m., when, according to the police report, three individuals entered the store, loaded a shopping cart with food, and left without paying. The suspects attempted to load the stolen items into a van parked outside. A store clerk followed them out and tried to recover the cart. At that point, the van’s driver exited the vehicle with a handgun, threatened the clerk, and fired a shot.

Fearing for his life, the clerk drew his firearm and returned fire, striking the armed suspect. The group of suspects then fled the scene, abandoning the cart and the stolen merchandise.

Shortly after the incident, police responded to a report of a shooting victim in the 3200 block of Ridgecrest Street. Officers located one individual with gunshot wounds and another uninjured male, both later identified as suspects in the robbery. The injured individual was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials have charged multiple suspects in connection with the robbery. The charges include aggravated assault, robbery, and theft of property under $1,000. One of the suspects was also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The clerk was not injured during the incident, and the stolen merchandise was recovered.

This incident highlights the importance of prioritizing personal safety during high-stress situations. While the clerk was able to defend himself effectively, the decision to pursue the suspects outside the store placed him in significant danger, as evidenced by the armed suspect firing first. This situation could have ended tragically.

In any self-defense situation, it’s crucial to remember that the use of deadly force should be reserved for clear, imminent threats to life or serious bodily harm. Remaining calm and knowing when to disengage can be just as vital as knowing when to act. Thankfully, in this case, the clerk’s actions ensured his safety, but this incident serves as a reminder to always weigh the risks involved in such situations.
