Several mainstream media outlets have reported that Justin Trudeau might step down from his position in the ruling class of Canada. Policy disputes are said to be the reason Trudeau may step down as Prime Minister.

Trudeau has not yet made a final decision on whether or not he will quit, a source said according to a report by Reuters. The Globe and Mail (behind a paywall) reported earlier that Trudeau was expected to announce as early as Monday that he would quit as leader of the Liberal Party after nine years in office.

During his first two terms as prime minister, Trudeau ushered in Senate reforms, signed a new trade deal with the United States, and introduced a carbon tax to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Recently, President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to enforce tariffs on Canada over illegal immigration, saying in lieu of doing so, the country could instead, become the U.S.’s 51st state.

Trump Suggested Canada Become The 51st State

Trudeau had traveled to Mar-a-Largo in an attempt to avoid a trade war with the U.S., but that didn’t appear to manifest any resolution. According to a report by RT, following the meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump took to social media to mock Trudeau, repeatedly referring to him as the governor of Canada and suggesting that the country becoming the 51st state of the U.S. would be a “great idea.”

Recent polls have also indicated that the liberals are trailing behind the conservatives which are led by Pierre Poilievre in Canada. With inflation rising and his government’s policies under fire, opposition leaders and some Liberal MPs have urged him not to seek a fourth term.

Sources allegedly told The Globe and Mail that they did not know a specific timeline that would be followed, but expected Trudeau to announce his plans before a national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday. It remains unclear whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new Liberal leader is selected.
