LAUREL COUNTY, KY — A potential self-defense shooting is under investigation after an incident on the evening of January 13, 2025, at a residence off Hooppole Creek Road, approximately 12 miles east of London.

According to a report from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call at around 9:09 PM regarding a male subject who had been shot. Upon arrival, investigators determined that two individuals at the residence had allegedly been assaulted by a male subject. During the altercation, the assailant reportedly reached for a firearm, at which point another male at the scene shot the individual, allegedly in self-defense.

The injured man sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was transported via Air Evac to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of serious injuries. Law enforcement officers recovered a pistol at the scene, which is being processed as part of the investigation.

The case, led by Detective Taylor McDaniel, will be presented to a Laurel County grand jury for further consideration. Assisting at the scene were additional sheriff’s deputies, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, the Bush Volunteer Fire Department, and Air Evac personnel.

Further details about the relationship between the parties involved or the circumstances leading up to the shooting have not yet been disclosed.

A Valuable Reminder: Stay Prepared After a Defensive Encounter

This case highlights an important but often overlooked consideration for responsible gun owners. In the aftermath of a self-defense shooting, law enforcement will almost always take custody of the firearm used in the incident as evidence for the duration of the investigation. While this is standard procedure, it can leave the defender temporarily unarmed.

Having access to a backup firearm can ensure you are not left defenseless in the days or weeks it may take to have your primary firearm returned. However, it’s essential to always secure backup firearms responsibly to prevent unauthorized access. Remember, preparation doesn’t end with knowing how to use a firearm but also includes anticipating the legal and logistical outcomes of a defensive use-of-force situation.

Stay informed, stay prepared, and always prioritize safety in your self-defense strategy.
