DECATUR, AL — A woman fatally shot a man with a long history of criminal convictions after he reportedly broke into her home late Sunday night. Authorities say the woman is cooperating with police and is not facing charges as the investigation continues.

The incident occurred in the 1200 block of 22nd Avenue SW. According to scanner traffic from the night of the incident, a burglary in progress was reported, with the caller whispering about the intruder while a man could be heard screaming in the background. Moments later, dispatchers relayed that the woman had shot the intruder in the chest. He was described as unconscious and not breathing.

Responding officers arrived to find 46-year-old Narado Brinkley dead at the scene. Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn later confirmed his identity. Brinkley had an extensive criminal record that included convictions for drug offenses, weapons violations, and burglary, according to public records reviewed by FOX54.

The woman’s identity has not been released. No injuries to the homeowner were reported, and she is said to be fully cooperating with investigators.

In a life-threatening situation like a home invasion, the ability to respond with appropriate force can be the difference between survival and tragedy. This incident highlights the importance of being prepared to defend oneself when confronted by a violent and unpredictable threat inside one’s own home.
