Glock has officially announced the release of its long-anticipated Gen6 pistols during a launch event held Thursday at the company’s headquarters in Georgia.
Attendees were given early access to shoot and handle the new Glock 17, 19, and 45 models, all showcasing the upgrades included in the Gen6 series.

New Optics Mounting System

At the top of the list is Glock’s redesigned optics system, which blends characteristics of both direct-mount and plate-based configurations. The Gen6 pistols ship with three polymer plates — including one for the Trijicon RMRm Leupold DeltaPoint and another footprint that may support the Steiner MPS. Glock explained that the polymer plate acts like a shock absorber. It’s slightly taller than the milled cut, compressing as the optic is torqued down, resulting in a lower mounting profile than traditional plate setups.

Enhanced Serrations and Slide Stop Protection

Slide serrations at the front and rear have been deepened and now taper down, offering more positive traction. A protective ridge has been added around the slide stop lever, designed to address issues reported by shooters with high thumbs inadvertently riding the lever and preventing slide lock. John Lovell of Warrior Poet Society noted that this fix prevented the slide from failing to lock back during his time on the range.

Refined Grip and Texture

The Gen6 frame features a new grip texture — a hybrid of the RT2 and RT4 designs — providing larger square blocks with smaller insets for added traction. A built-in beavertail is now part of the grip itself, rather than on the optional backstrap accessory. The grip now includes a built-in palm swell, and all three included backstrap sizes feature the same contour to accommodate different hand sizes.

A newly integrated thumb ledge (or “gas pedal”) has been cut into the grip module without affecting holster compatibility, offering improved support hand indexing.

Upgraded Trigger and Ergonomics

A factory flat-faced trigger makes its debut with the Gen6. While the trigger break and reset remain unchanged from the Gen5, the redesigned shoe offers a flatter surface for more consistent finger placement.

The frame also now includes a trigger guard undercut, aimed at reducing the common “Glock knuckle” irritation that many shooters experience. Along with a slightly shorter trigger reach and a flared magwell, the ergonomic changes show Glock’s effort to improve shooter comfort and control without compromising reliability.

First Range Impressions

The Gen6 Glock 17, 19, and 45 ran smoothly during test fire sessions at the event, delivering the consistent performance Glock is known for, now with enhanced handling. These changes reflect practical refinements rather than radical redesigns — ideal for both longtime Glock users and those considering the platform for concealed carry or duty use.

With the Gen 6, Glock isn’t reinventing the wheel — they’re refining it. And for those who typically add aftermarket upgrades to their pistols, many of those features now come standard out of the box.
