RALEIGH, N.C. — An attempted carjacking near the Red Roof Inn off Glenwood Avenue and Interstate 440 on Sunday night ended with a teenage suspect shot after the would-be victim turned the tables with his own firearm, Raleigh police reported.

The incident occurred just after 8:50 p.m. in the motel parking lot along Arrow Road. According to authorities, a 17-year-old armed with a gun attempted to steal a man’s sedan. During the confrontation, the teen suspect reportedly fired at least one shot.

However, the intended victim, who was also armed, responded decisively by returning fire, striking the suspect. The teenager was transported to WakeMed for medical treatment for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

The armed citizen was unharmed during the exchange, and no other injuries were reported.

By the time police arrived, the area was secured, with part of the Red Roof Inn parking lot cordoned off by crime scene tape as investigators processed the scene.

Police indicated that more details about the incident, including potential charges, would be released in the coming days.

This incident underscores the importance of responsible firearm ownership and situational awareness. The quick response of the would-be victim highlights the principle of being prepared to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm.

If you choose to carry a firearm, ensure that you are familiar with local laws and practice regularly to maintain proficiency. Being prepared doesn’t just mean carrying a firearm—it means knowing when and how to use it effectively and legally.
