KALAMAZOO, MI — A 60-year-old man is cooperating with authorities after shooting a man who allegedly assaulted him with a snow shovel in a Sunday evening altercation that Kalamazoo police believe may have been a case of self-defense.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Douglas Avenue. According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), the 60-year-old had just returned a ladder to a nearby residence in the 1100 block when he was confronted by a 49-year-old man. The younger man, armed with a snow shovel, reportedly ordered him to leave the area before shoving and striking him with the shovel, causing minor injuries.

In response to the physical attack, the 60-year-old drew his legally owned and registered handgun and fired two rounds, hitting the 49-year-old once. He then called 911 and remained at the scene to speak with responding officers.

KDPS officers arrived and rendered aid to the wounded man, who was transported to a local hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition. Officers recovered the shovel used in the assault, two 9mm shell casings, and the firearm.

Investigators noted that surveillance footage obtained during the investigation appears to support the shooter’s account of events. As a result, the man was not arrested at the scene. The case remains under active investigation and will be submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact KDPS’s Criminal Investigations Division or submit anonymous tips via the Kalamazoo Silent Observer program.

This incident highlights the importance of understanding when the use of deadly force is justified. In most jurisdictions, including Michigan, individuals may use deadly force if they reasonably believe they are in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm. However, remaining at the scene, cooperating with law enforcement, and calling 911 immediately—as the defender did here—are crucial steps that support a legitimate claim of self-defense.
