The Department of Government Efficiency has come out against a report by Reuters, in which the media outlet declared that the agency was no longer operational and said it “doesn’t exist.” DOGE has rejected the report as “fake news.”

The Reuters report claimed that DOGE had been disbanded; however, the agency has since stated that that was false information, and insists that it remains operational and will resume regular updates. More specifically, Reuters stated in the report on Sunday that DOGE had effectively disbanded eight months before its mandate expired. The report said that Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor told the outlet earlier this month that DOGE “doesn’t exist” as a centralized entity and that many of its functions have been absorbed by the OPM.

DOGE was launched by United States President Donald Trump shortly after taking office in January. The current administration has billed it as a sweeping effort to slash federal waste and bureaucracy. Trump appointed tech billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk as his government efficiency czar.  A row between Trump and Musk earlier this year appeared to shove DOGE’s agenda off course. The rulers argued over Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” and it created a political firestorm within conservative circles.

Trump Vs. Musk: “Big, Beautiful Bill” Feud Sparks Overnight Political Firestorm

Questions about the agency’s future surfaced in June after the very public feud.  Musk quit as head of DOGE and left Washington amid the dispute. Uncertainty over the department’s status had been building for months. Politico earlier reported that DOGE staff had vacated its headquarters in June, packing up “clothes and bedding. The agency had become known for unannounced office visits, deep spending cuts, and mass layoffs.

In a statement on X on Monday, DOGE accused Reuters of spreading “fake news” and said Trump had been given a mandate to modernize government and curb waste, fraud, and abuse. It claimed that “just last week, DOGE terminated 78 wasteful contracts and saved taxpayers $335M,” and would return with its “regularly scheduled” Friday update in the coming days, according to a report by RT.

Not having centralized leadership lording power over those underneath is not the same as the agency being disbanded. Do you think we’ll ever see the alleged “fruits” of these cost savings to the taxpayer?
