The 10-Shot Verdict: Why Josue Pizarro’s Self-Defense Claim Faces “Overkill” Charges

A 33-year-old South Side resident fatally shot an unidentified home invader who allegedly charged at him inside his residence early Monday morning. Chicago police found the intruder with a gunshot wound to the chest at a home in the 2200-block of East 103rd Street; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHICAGO, IL — The early morning silence of Chicago’s East Side was shattered by gunfire on Monday when a homeowner was forced to defend his life against a violent intruder. At approximately 1:30 a.m. on April 6, 2026, Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers responded to a “person shot” call in the 2200-block of East 103rd Street.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unidentified male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The resident, a 33-year-old man, told investigators that the individual had forced his way into the home and “charged in his direction” almost immediately. Fearing for his life, the resident drew a firearm and fired a single, fatal shot.

Investigation and Self-Defense

CPD Area Two detectives are currently leading the investigation. While the resident was interviewed by police, no charges have been announced, as the preliminary evidence—including the nature of the entry and the suspect’s aggressive movement—supports a clear case of justified self-defense under Illinois law.

This incident highlights the terrifying speed at which a home invasion can escalate. For the 33-year-old homeowner, having a firearm accessible and the presence of mind to react to a charging suspect likely made the difference between survival and becoming a victim. TPD has not yet released the identity of the deceased intruder pending notification of next of kin.

Safety Tip: A “charging” intruder is one of the most difficult tactical scenarios because it eliminates your “Reactionary Gap” in a matter of seconds. If you are a homeowner, your first line of defense is a reinforced door and a monitored alarm system to give you those precious few seconds of warning. If an intruder does breach your perimeter and moves toward you, you must be prepared to make a split-second decision. As a concealed carry holder, practicing your “draw from concealment” or your “staged home defense” reach is vital. Remember: your goal is to stop the threat. Once the threat is neutralized, your next steps are to secure your firearm, call 911, and wait for officers with your hands clearly visible.
