Update 2:00 PM PST: President Donald Trump has confirmed on Truth Social that Charlie Kirk has died following the shooting earlier today at Utah Valley University. In his post, Trump called Kirk “great, and even legendary,” and offered condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their family. No further details on Kirk’s passing have yet been released by authorities or Turning Point USA.


OREM, UT — Conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot earlier today during an event at Utah Valley University, prompting a lockdown on campus and swift law enforcement response.

The incident occurred around noon local time while Kirk was speaking as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” Witnesses reported a single shot fired approximately 20 minutes into the event. Video from the scene appeared to show Kirk struck near the neck, causing panic as attendees rushed to safety.

Campus police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody. Authorities stated that there is no continuing threat to students or staff. The university issued an emergency alert to shelter in place immediately after the shooting, later announcing that the campus was secure.

Kirk was quickly removed from the venue by his security detail. His current medical condition has not yet been confirmed by officials or representatives from Turning Point USA.

Reactions poured in quickly from political leaders. Utah Senator Mike Lee wrote on X, “Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.” Vice President J.D. Vance added, “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.” Utah Governor Spencer Cox also condemned the violence, while the FBI confirmed it was assisting local authorities in the investigation.

The shooting drew sharp concern from across the political spectrum. FBI Director Kash Patel stated the agency is “closely monitoring” developments and has agents on the ground.
