CHICAGO, IL — A bystander was seriously injured during a shootout involving burglary suspects and a concealed carry license (CCL) holder late Thursday night in the city’s South Side, according to Chicago police.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. in the 8700 block of South Dauphin Avenue. Police reported that a 40-year-old CCL holder confronted a suspect attempting to break into a vehicle.

As the burglary suspect fled on foot, another individual, believed to be an accomplice, exited a nearby vehicle and opened fire on the CCL holder. The license holder returned fire in self-defense.

During the exchange of gunfire, a 23-year-old bystander was struck in the thigh. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said the first suspect returned to the vehicle and fled the scene, and no arrests have been made. Area Two detectives are actively investigating the incident.

This incident highlights the inherent risks of intervening in crimes such as car burglaries. While the desire to protect property is understandable, attempting to confront a suspect can escalate quickly and unpredictably. The concealed carry holder in this situation likely did not anticipate facing a second, armed accomplice.

It’s essential to remember that property can be replaced, but your life cannot. Insurance exists to handle losses from theft or vandalism, whereas engaging an unknown threat could cost you far more. Staying safe and returning home to your loved ones should always take precedence over protecting material possessions. Consider observing from a safe distance and contacting law enforcement to handle situations like these.
