According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the ATF processed approximately 150,000 e-Forms on January 1 alone — a staggering increase from the usual daily volume of around 2,500. This surge in activity has severely strained the agency’s IT infrastructure, triggering system glitches and disrupting operations for Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs), manufacturers, and retailers who rely on the platform for regulatory compliance and business continuity.

ATF officials have confirmed the issues and are reportedly working to resolve them by directly engaging with affected users. The agency has acknowledged the urgency of the situation and its impact on the industry.

NSSF has expressed concern over the operational challenges caused by the outages, noting that the disruptions are resulting in customer service complications and lost revenue. The foundation has pressed ATF to prioritize restoring system stability and has advised affected businesses to document all issues and communicate directly with ATF to assist in identifying systemic problems.

To address the root of the issue, NSSF is urging members of the firearms industry to contact their congressional representatives in support of additional funding for ATF’s IT modernization.
