A violent altercation in Manitou Springs resulted in a stabbing and shooting, leaving both individuals hospitalized. Police say the incident stemmed from a personal relationship dispute, and the attacker has been arrested.

MANITOU SPRINGS, CO (2-minute read) — A violent encounter in Manitou Springs Tuesday evening left two men injured and one under arrest after a suspected attempted murder in a residential driveway. According to the Manitou Springs Police Department (MSPD), officers and emergency responders were dispatched around 7 p.m. following a 911 call reporting a stabbing.

Authorities say the suspect, 22-year-old Wyatt Pearson, arrived at the man’s residence and stabbed him in the neck outside the home. Despite his injury, the homeowner retrieved a firearm and shot Pearson twice—in the stomach and chest—before calling emergency services. Both men were transported to a local hospital and are currently listed in stable condition.

Following the initial investigation, police determined that Pearson was the aggressor in the situation. He has since been arrested and faces serious charges including criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder and first-degree assault. Law enforcement has indicated that the confrontation appears to have been motivated by a marital or relationship-related dispute, although further details have not been disclosed.

Pearson remains hospitalized and will be booked into jail upon release. The homeowner, who acted in self-defense, is not facing charges. Colorado law supports the use of deadly force in certain self-defense situations, particularly when an individual is faced with an imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death on their property.

Understanding Colorado’s Self-Defense Laws

Colorado is a “Stand Your Ground” state and also has the “Make My Day” law, which allows residents to use deadly force in their homes without a duty to retreat if they believe an intruder intends to commit a crime and may use physical force. In this case, the fact that the incident occurred in the driveway may raise legal nuances, but the homeowner’s response appears consistent with the right to protect oneself from an immediate and violent attack.

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings and have a plan in place for personal defense, especially in or around your home. Knowing your state’s self-defense laws can help you make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
