A tragic shooting on Florida State University’s campus in Tallahassee has left two dead and several injured. Authorities have neutralized the shooter, who is now in custody, but the campus remains an active crime scene.

TALLAHASSEE, FL (2-minute read) — A deadly shooting unfolded at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, leaving two individuals dead and at least six others injured. Law enforcement confirmed the suspect is in custody, and officials have stated that the threat to the campus has been “neutralized.” However, the surrounding area remains an active crime scene as investigations continue.

The gunman is the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy, and police said that one of that Deputy’s firearms was located at the scene.

The shooting triggered a rapid and terrifying response from students and faculty. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunfire erupted on campus. One student, visibly shaken, recounted seeing the gunman exit an orange Hummer near campus. “He looked like a normal college dude—orange T-shirt, khaki shorts,” the student said. “Then he pulled out a rifle and started shooting in my direction.”

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare confirmed that at least six individuals are being treated for injuries related to the shooting. Their conditions have not yet been made public. Authorities have not released the identity of the victims pending notification of families.

The suspect was identified as a 20-year-old man, though we will not name him here, as per Concealed Nation policy.

Heightened Awareness on College Campuses

This tragic event highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding campus security and the unpredictability of active shooter situations. While Florida State University acted swiftly to alert students and secure the area, the incident reveals how rapidly such events can unfold—even in seemingly safe environments.

Colleges across the nation have increasingly implemented active shooter training and campus alert systems. However, incidents like this emphasize the importance of personal preparedness. Those who legally carry concealed firearms often do so in hopes of protecting themselves and others, though rules vary significantly by state and institution.

Safety Tip: If you’re legally carrying on or near campus, always know your surroundings, understand campus-specific firearm policies, and train regularly for defensive scenarios.
